Biography of Thomas Jefferson Essay example -- Essays Papers Bio Presi
Biography of Thomas Jefferson Third President of the United States of America. Thomas Jefferson (1743-1826) was the third president of the United States and a creator of the Declaration of Independence. Thomas Jefferson was a philosopher, politician, scientist, architect, inventor, musician, and writer. Thomas Jefferson was also one of the smartest leaders in history. His father was named Peter Jefferson, a very rich Farmer from Virginia. Thomas's Mother, Jane Randolph Jefferson, was part of the Randolph family. The Randolph Family was a big part of Virginia history, and also very rich also. Peter and Jane Jefferson moved to Goochland county, because Peter had just gotten 400 acres of land there. Thomas Jefferson was born in the log cabin in which the family lived. Thomas Jefferson was the third child out of four brother and six sisters. Two years after Thomas was born, William Randolph, a cousin of Mrs. Jefferson and a close friend of the family, died. His will requested that Peter Jefferson move to his estate, take care of the house and land, and make sure Randolph's four children get educated. The Jefferson?s remained at Randolph's estate for seven years. The estate was called Shadwell. Thomas Jefferson was quite the little intelligent boy. At age nine, Thomas Jefferson Started Latin, Greek, and French Studies at a boarding school. Thomas liked to Horse back ride, Canoe, Hunt, and fish. When Thomas was fourteen years old, his father passed away. Thomas Jefferson was the oldest son, so Thomas had to take care of the family. Jefferson was a tall, slender boy with sandy reddish hair and fair skin that freckled and sunburned easily. A serious student, Thomas also enjoyed the lighter aspects of the education of a Virginia gentleman. Jefferson learned to dance and play the violin. Weekends and holidays Thomas spent either at Shadwell entertaining guests or at his friends' plantations. After two years at William and Mary (A College in Virginia?s capital city), Jefferson left to study law. Thomas still studied French, Italian, and English history and literature. In 1767, Jefferson was chosen to the practice of law in Virginia. Jefferson's main source of income was his land. That?s because most lawyers didn?t make enough money back then. On New Year's Day, 1772, Jefferson married Martha Wayles Skelton, a 24-year-old widow. Patty... ...cts. "I cannot write volumes on a single sheet," Adams wrote plaintively, "but these letters of yours require volumes from me." Jefferson and his friend Adams, both of whom had played such great parts in the winning of independence, died on Independence Day, July 4, 1826. Jefferson left detailed instructions for his burial in the graveyard of his estate. A simple monument was to mark his resting place. Thomas Jefferson specified that the monument was to be made of coarse stone so that "no one might be tempted hereafter to destroy it for the value of the materials." Thomas Jefferson wrote his own epitaph: Here was buried Thomas Jefferson Author of the Declaration of American Independence Of the Statute of Virginia for Religious Freedom And Father of the University of Virginia These achievements were to be inscribed on the monument, and "not a word more ... because by these, as testimonials that I have lived, I wish most to be remembered." Jefferson's wishes were carried out, but vandals later overturned and broke the stone. A careful reproduction now marks Jefferson's grave. Awake and Sing by Clifford Odet versus A Raisin in the Sun by Lorraine
Clifford Odet's play, "Awake and Sing", and Lorraine Hansberry's play, "A Raisin in the Sun", both revolve around the struggle of attaining the American dream during the hardships of a struggling economy and most important the value of a family. By analyzing the main characters, Ralph and Walter, it can be seen that even though they wish to use the insurance money to fulfill their dream they eventually realize that with family they can survive through poverty. Both characters are being weighed down by poverty. This brings them to dream of the life they could live if one was giving a chance "to get to first base" and the other a chance to open up a liquor store. Ralph doesn't really seem to be interested in his family at first and is only interested in his own advancement from all his hard work. He wishes he could afford a pair of shoelaces and "a pair of black and white shoes." Ralph is only thinking of himself and how he and his girl can live together. That is where "life begins" for him. Walter also wants to see advancement, but for both him and his family even if it ...

Nature, Healthy to the Environment and You Essay
Throughout time cities have been the gathering place of great thinkers and idealist who have moved our world forward. Being a place where many people who hold similar ideas may gather and form a community, city life brings inspiration and innovation to many common aspects of life such as art, technology, and pop culture. Without such urbanized areas the world may not have been home to the revolutionary ideas of great minds like James Joyce, Shakespeare, or even Einstein who was inspired by commuter trains (Lehrer par. 1). And yet, todayââ¬â¢s modern cities have shifted from not only a metropolis of ideas but one that can be equally detrimental to oneââ¬â¢s mind and health. The expanding urbanization and population within cities have torn down the natural environment and replaced it with a jungle of concrete. Instead of inhabiting wide-open spaces as humans have lived in for thousands of years, many cities have become crowded; surrounded by strangers, bustling cars, traffic, lig hts, and millions of different noises in a setting almost devoid of nature. Imagine walking down a crowded sidewalk trying to maneuver around oncoming pedestrians, making sure to keep up with the ever fluctuating traffic flow and preventing yourself from being distracted by the many commercialized advertisement signs, posters, and billboards. Cars are backed up as far as the eye can see, blaring their horns and flashing their taillights as they inch forward. To many, it is common knowledge how exhausting the city life can be, but recent studies have shown just how drastically being in an urban environment can impair oneââ¬â¢s mental capabilities. Consider everything that your brain has to keep track of and its no wonder why your brain would have a hard time keeping everything in memory, and remaining calm. The controlled perception needed to stay focused can be very taxing on our minds. Settings similar to the above are an everyday experience in the United Stateââ¬â¢s most urbanized cities from New York to San Francisco; however, places like this arenââ¬â¢t just limited to the U.S. people all across the world are suffering. In fact, fifty years ago only 10% of the worldââ¬â¢s population lived in cities. Those statistics have since changed to over 50% with an estimated 75% by the year 2050, accounting for the production of two-thirds of the worldââ¬â¢s energy and carbon emissions, putting a strain on the environmentââ¬â¢s sustainability of clean air. This increase in the use of economic resources and the production of pollution has led to a sharp increase of many diseases such as asthma which now affects nearly 1 in every 10 children living in the United States, or attention deficit disorder, which is much more apparent to those who live in urban environments rather than those in a more natural setting. Marc G. Berman, a professor at the University of Michigan performed two experiments published in 2008 which tested the restorative effects on cognitive functioning of interactions within natural environments compared to more urbanized areas. For the first experiment students were given GPS receivers and were told to take a fifty-to-fifty five minute walk in either the Ann Arbor Arboretum (a park near campus) or to walk in downtown Ann Arbor. The students then took a psychological test of attention and working memory by repeating a series of three to nine numbers backwards. As a result, people who had walked through the city were in a worse mood and scored significantly lower on the test. In Experiment 2, participants viewed either pictures of nature or urban areas to further control each participantââ¬â¢s experience, which proved that merely viewing pictures of nature can have restorative beneï ¬ ts. Even the slightest glimpse of nature can be invaluable to those living in urban areas as they provide a mental break of relaxation. For example, patients with a view of trees, flower beds and other greenery outside their hospital window have been shown to recover more quickly than those without. In the same setting from an apartment building, residents have better self control while able to focus and relax more. Evidence proves that exposure to the natural world improves mental health. Thus, the answer to solving the adverse cognitive affects that urbanized areas place on our minds is for planners, ecologists, architects, and landscape-architects to work together to integrate nature into cities, possibly to even reinvent them. City leaders should seek to plan large urban parks that include playgrounds, trails, picnic facilities, and gardens such as those in Central Park New York or the Parque Tres de Febrero located in Buenos Ares which is known for its lakes, rose gardens and city planetarium. Not only are these parks beautifully landscaped and allow city residents a place of relaxation, they may also encourage visitors from all over the region, resulting in economic growth. Of course, the benefit of extensive parks built inside urban areas does not stop there. They are ecological systems essential to filtering urban run-off and the improvement of air quality. Another solution for improving the mental health of citizens and to the health of the city itself would be to integrate greenery into the streets and buildings, establishing a green environment within urban infrastructure. On a small scale, cities may integrate parklets to repurpose under-utilized parts of streets or roadways and provide a space for people to enjoy themselves or the company of others. Parklets are platforms built in parking lanes made to provide a welcoming area of practicality and visual aesthetics with benches, planters, bike racks, or even cafà © tables. On a much larger scale, architects can work with engineers to build ââ¬Å"green buildingsâ⬠a structure that is designed to reduce the impact on the environment and human health by efficiently using resources, improving employee productivity, and reducing environmental degradation. This is achieved through various techniques that take advantage of renewable resources (solar panels, green roofs, rain gardens, etcâ⬠¦) measures are taken to reduce energy consumption by allowing extra insulation within the confinements of the building which prevents air leakage while solar panels are implemented to lessen the need for electricity and energy cost during the day. One other key objective in green buildings is the conservation of water quality. By using fixtures such as low-flush toilets and low-flow shower heads which manage water recycling and benefit the minimization of waste-water. On the aesthetic side, biophilic design emphasizes harmony with natural features by integrating the environment with architectural design to create a place both pleasant and natural for people to work in. Due to its impact on human psychology, biophilic design plays a large role in health care while finding ways to cope with the the rates of technological progress compared to those of mental evolution. According to Biophilia expert Yannick Joye, ââ¬Å"by including elements of ancestral habitats in the built environment, one can counter potential deleterious effects, which stem from this dominance, [of uniform/modernist environments], resulting in more positive effects and more relaxed physiological and psychological states.â⬠Green buildings, incorporated with biophilic design would not only decrease the impact put on our environment by creating a more self sustaining city with fresh air and improved amount of resources. It may also reconnect urban dwellers with the natural world away from the bustling cars and crowded city streets, fostering restoration, improve emotional well-being, and promote health. Hip Abductor Strengthening Exercises Health And Social Care Essay
The gluteal muscle medius is described as a strong kidnapper and median rotator of the hip articulation. During the stance stage of pace, the gluteal muscle medius is supported to forestall the sagging of the pelvic girdle on the unsupported side. The action of the gluteal muscle minimus is said to be similar to that of gluteal muscle medius4. Curative exercising is one of the most of import intercessions used by rehabilitation professionals. Therapists routinely prescribe hep abduction beef uping exercisings for patients who have sustained Hip hurt or others who have undergone entire hip arthroplasty5. Physical healers use many fluctuations of hip kidnapper beef uping exercisings in the rehabilitation procedure. Many clinicians use a standard side lying hip abduction exercise6,7,8. Other common methods of beef uping hip kidnapper musculuss include, Weight bearing exercises5. i Pelvic bead i Weight bearing hip abduction i Weight bearing with flexure abduction of contra sidelong Hip Non-Weight bearing exercises5. i Non-Weight bearing side-lying hip abduction i Non-Weight bearing standing hip abduction i Non-Weight bearing standing flexed hip abduction Neumann and colleagues9,10,11 reported that electromyography ( EMG ) activity of hip kidnappers during the stance stage of walking additions when transporting a burden in the manus contralateral to the given hip kidnappers. This survey intends to compare the effectivity of weight bearing hep abduction in stable platform sidelong increase and wobble board sidelong increase in bettering the strength of hip abductors5.1.1 NEED FOR THE STUDYHip kidnapper beef uping exercisings over stable and unstable platform may assist in steering the determination doing procedure needed for appropriate exercising prescription.1.2 STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEMEffectiveness of wobble board sidelong step-up vs. stable platform sidelong increase in hip kidnapper beef uping on healthy topics.1.3 AimEfficacy of wobble board sidelong step-up exercising in hip kidnapper strengthening. Right lower appendage was chosen for rating and informations aggregation for all topics. The Hand Held Dynamometer was fixed on the side of the scrutiny couch16. Soft froth was placed on the grip of the Hand Held Dynamometer to supply comfort to the topics during the participation16. Right lower appendage was chosen for rating and informations aggregation for all topics. Subjects were positioned so that the ergometer was 5 centimeter proximal to the sidelong femoral condyle of the right limb16. The same arrangement was used for each topic during pre and post-tests. To stabilise the pelvic girdle, a belt was placed across the participant ââ¬Ës anterior superior iliac spinal columns and around the tabular array during the proving procedure16. Care was taken non to let the topics to revolve the pelvic girdle or execute internal rotary motion, external rotary motion or flexure at the hip. Use of upper appendages to stabilise the bole was permitted. Maximal attempt was used to execute a ââ¬Å" Make trial â⬠5,42 in which topic exerted a maximum isometric force against the ergometer for five seconds on each of the pre and post-test. Three measurings were taken and mean to be used as informations for analysis. The topics practiced each exercising to familiarise themselves with each undertaking until they demonstrated proficiency. Subjects by and large required 8 to 10 pattern repeats for several exercising.Description OF THE WEIGHT BEARING HIP ABDUCTION EXERCISES: ââ¬âIn group A, subjects stood with both lower appendages shoulder width apart so they perform a sidelong increase on the 11cm tallness wobble board in a frontal plane following which maintaining the pelvic a flat place the topics lifts the contra sidelong lower appendage from the land and kidnap the leg up to 25Es5. Then the topics return back to get downing place and repeats the exercising for 15 repeats over 3 sets. In group B, the topics stood on their right lower appendage on 11cm high stable platform in a frontal plane and keeping the pelvic girdle in degree and so were instructed to raise the contra sidelong appendage from the land and to kidnap to 25Es5. In the both processs a 1 Kg sandbag was added at the ankle degree at the contra sidelong lower extremity5 for heightening ipsilateral hip kidnapper enlisting. The frequence of exercisings was three Sessionss for a hebdomad for four hebdomads continuance. DiscussionThis Study concentrated on to better the strength of hip kidnapper musculus by utilizing wobble Board Lateral Step-up and stable platform sidelong Step-up Exercise. Among 60 topics 30 topics received wobble Board Lateral Step-up and other 30 received the stable platform sidelong step-up Exercise. Exercises are normally used weight bearing exercisings for the lower appendage. The mated t-value ( 40.92 ) for wobble board sidelong measure up exercising and paired ââ¬Ët ââ¬Ë value 31.37 for stable platform sidelong measure up exercising shows that there is statistically important alteration at P & lt ; 0.05 ( 5 % degree ) over the survey continuance in bettering the strength of hip kidnapper. The un mated t-value ( 16.53 ) shows that there is statistically important difference at P & lt ; 0.05 ( 5 % degree ) between wobble board sidelong step-up exercising and stable platform sidelong step-up exercising. The comparing shows that there is important addition in the strength of hip kidnapper utilizing wobble board lateral increase than utilizing stable platform sidelong step-up exercising. Nawoczenski and Neumann ( 2002 ) have defined an internal torsion as the consequence of a force be givening to Travel a organic structure section about a Joint ââ¬Ës axis of rotation23 with its magnitude dependant on the applied External torsion. In this plan the external torsion produced by gravitation on caput, weaponries, bole and contra sidelong lower appendage ( about 84 % of organic structure mass ) 5 contracted by internal forces of gluteus muscular structure. Exercise in weight bearing generates really high torsion for hip kidnapper musculus than non weight bearing hip kidnapper exercisings. Hence exercising in weight bearing would be more good in gluteal musculus strengthening and rehabilitation. Lateral increases on unstable platform ( wobble board ) have non been described in literature. This survey focused on strength betterments due to unstable platform sidelong increases. In this survey the group exercises with wobble board sidelong increase improved better than stable platform sidelong increase. This may be attributed to bring oning neuromuscular versions of stretch physiological reaction, snap of the musculus and centripetal system of the joint22. Weight bearing exercisings induce co-contraction of agonist and antagonist musculus synchronism in keeping joint stableness by increased joint compaction. Wobble board sidelong increase may hold enhanced centripetal motor preparation of the hip kidnapper musculus in part to improved musculus public presentation. The survey noted that there is important betterment in the strength of kidnapper in the both groups. This may be due to specific preparation of hip kidnapper musculus due to personify weight opposition in sidelong step-up exercisings. Clinically, many survey reveals that these exercisings are really helpful in late ââ¬â stage of exercising plan in conditions like entire Hip arthroplasty, After break immobilisation, Ankle sprains, iliotibial set clash syndrome, and knee joint disfunction status and besides featuring activities, like basket ball, and association football, required motions in lower limbs. The chief operational trouble faced during this survey was the regular followup of the topic which needed repeated supports to the topics. In a over all position in this survey states that exercisings are better effectual in beef uping hip kidnappers during late stage of rehabilitation.7. DecisionThe analysis of information reveals that there is important difference in the result with wobble board sidelong measure up exercising when compared with stable platform sidelong measure us exercise in bettering the musculuss strength of hip kidnappers. So, the wobble board sidelong step-up exercising may be used in orthopaedic rehabilitation for bettering the strength of hip kidnapper musculus.Restrictioni This survey did non concentrate on trunk place can significantly act upon the demands on the hip kidnapper musculuss during the weight bearing exercisings. i This survey was conducted on the immature symptomless topics which precludes direct extrapolation of consequences to patients with hurting from degenerative alterations, acute hurt, or post operative intercession. i Regular followup of the topics need to be done during and after the survey. i Merely male topics were selected.Recommendationi A similar survey can be done among the females to measure the strength response. i An Identical survey can be done on patients who have undergone Total Hip Arthroplasty or after hep joint break immobilisation, iliotibial set syndrome conditions. i A similar survey can be done with other methods of exercisings. i A similar survey can be done with other age group.

Da Vinciââ¬â¢s Mona Lisa and Warholââ¬â¢s Marilyn Monroe Paintings Essay
Leonardo DaVinciââ¬â¢s Mona Lisa is one of the most well-known paintings in the world. Show anyone from a 60 year old man to a 10 year old girl a picture of the painting and, most likely, they will be able to name the painting as well as the painter. While some say that DaVinciââ¬â¢s painting is the most famous of all created, many of Andy Warholââ¬â¢s paintings are also easily recognizable. Almost everyone has seen the Campbellââ¬â¢s Soup Can series Warhol painted or his famous Triple Elvis print. This paper will be focusing on his Marilyn Monroe series, which I will be comparing and contrasting to the Mona Lisa. There are many obvious differences between the two paintings, such as the time period, color scheme, background and subject matter. My goal is to also point out some similarities such as their use of line, recreations, fame, and prominence in society. One of the major contrasts between the two works is the history behind the paintings. Andy Warhol was said to be fascinated with the actress Marilyn Monroeââ¬â¢s supposed suicide in August of 1962. Warhol proved the Proverb, ââ¬Å"Good men must die, but death cannot kill their namesâ⬠to be true, making his Marilyn Monroe series one of his most famous works. Warhol bought a publicity still of Marilynââ¬â¢s 1953 movie Niagara, cropped it, enlarged the face, and reproduced it on eight different canvases. Each painting was given a different color scheme. These paintings were the first solo exhibition for Warhol. The most famous of the series, Lemon Marilyn, was bought and kept in a private collection until 2007. While the subject of Warholââ¬â¢s painting is very well known and easily recognized, the subject of Leonardo DaVinciââ¬â¢s Mona Lisa was most likely commoner, and there are many different theories of who the woman could be. Some say the woman is DaVinci himself, in woman form. Others say it could be Lisa Gherardini; the wife of a wealthy businessman in Florence, Italy named Francesco Del Giocondo. DaVinci was commissioned to paint the Mona Lisa in 1503, and worked on it for four years before it was finished. DaVinci kept his painting for quite a while before he sold it to the King of France, King Francois, in 1516. (ââ¬Å"Mona Lisa.â⬠Lairweb.com. N.p., n.d. Web.) After the French Revolution, the painting was moved to the Louvre, where it remains today. The history behind the paintings also point out several more differences. There is only one Mona Lisa, while Warhol created many Marilyn paintings. The time period when the two painters lived was decades apart. DaVinci was alive from 1452-1519, while Warhol was born in 1928 and died in 1987. While Warhol was strictly an artist, DaVinci spent time as a mathematician, engineer, writer, and geologist as well. The two menââ¬â¢s styles of painting were very different as well. DaVinci painted in the style of chiaroscuro, the use of strong contrasts between light and dark, and sfumato. Sfumato is created by painting a color that turns slowly from light to dark tones to give off a kind of misty glow or smoky mystery. Andy Warhol was a major part of the Pop art movement. Jennifer Rosenberg of About.com quoted pop art as being, ââ¬Å"a new style of art that began in England in the mid-1950s and consisted of realistic renditions of popular, and everyday items.â⬠(Rosenberg, Jennifer. ââ¬Å"Andy Warhol.â⬠About.com 20th Century History. About.com, n.d. Web. 16 Dec. 2012.) Warhol used silk-screening to create Marilyn Monroe. Warhol is quoted as saying, ââ¬Å"In August 62 I started doing silkscreens. I wanted something stronger that gave more of an assembly line effectâ⬠¦you pick a photograph, blow it up, transfer it in glue onto silk, and then roll ink across it so the ink goes through the silk but not through the glueâ⬠¦ I was thrilled with it. When Marilyn Monroe happened to die that month, I got the idea to make screens of her beautiful face the first Marilyns.â⬠(ââ¬Å"Andy Warholââ¬â¢s Marilyn Prints.â⬠Andy Warholââ¬â¢s Marilyn Prints. Color Vision and Art, n.d. Web. 16 Dec. 2012.) DaVinciââ¬â¢s painting was progressive for the time. The traditional paintings of his time were of a head and shoulders portrait, in a very rigid or posed position. The Mona Lisa is painted all the way down to her hands, and she seems to be in a very comfortable, relaxed pose. Her pose is very linear, which conveys a sense of ââ¬Å"formal and dignified ideasâ⬠. (ROEMER, CK. ââ¬Å"Looking at Great Art Practice.â⬠Http://www.studiocodex.com. N.p., 2007. Web.) This would be appropriate if this woman is the wife of a wealthy man, which is one of the speculations of the womanââ¬â¢s identity. Andy Warholââ¬â¢s painting, on the other hand, seems almost regressive. Only Marilynââ¬â¢s face is shown. She is depicted with a very serious expression, and is very unnaturally posed. This seems to project a sense of excitement or disorder, which represent Marilynââ¬â¢s life very accurately. The two subjects of the painting are very different in appearance as well. The Mona Lisa has no makeup on. She is dressed very plainly and does not seem to be wearing any jewelry. Marilyn Monroe has a lot of make-up on and has her hair curled and styled. Marilyn seems to have a haughty or annoyed expression on her face, while Mona Lisa is smiling slightly and seems to be happy and content. Another major difference between the two paintings is the use of color. The Mona Lisa is depicted in very earthy tones. The tan color of the flesh seems closer to the viewer, while the muted browns, greens, tans, and blues seem to fade into the background. DaVinci used light and dark colors to highlight certain parts of the painting, such as the womanââ¬â¢s face and hands. The color palette is what would be expected if this was an actual photograph. Andy Warholââ¬â¢s Marilyn is the complete opposite of the Mona Lisa. None of the colors are natural, except, maybe, the makeup, and can appear shocking to the eye at first glance. All aspects of the painting are bright; eyes, lips, eye shadow, and hair. Warhol painted Marilyn in ten different color combinations with 250 of each color variation. (Henry. ââ¬Å"Henry On Pop Art.â⬠ââ¬ËHenry On Pop Artââ¬â¢ N.p., 08 Aug. 2011. Web. 16 Dec. 2012.) While the actual colors used in the paintings are very different, the way the painters used the colors brings out a similarity in the two. Mona Lisa is dressed very dark and her pale face is framed by dark hair. The light colors used in the background seem to bring the woman to the front of the painting. This was most definitely done on purpose by DaVinci. He wanted the viewer to focus on Mona Lisa. The same can be said of Warhol. He uses a bright contrasting color for his background of Marilyn Monroe. Although the background color almost always matches that of Marilynââ¬â¢s eye shadow, the background contrasts with the rest of the painting, bringing the face towards the viewer. The use of line in both paintings is also similar. No brush strokes are visible in either painting, and appear a bit foggy. The Mona Lisa is this way due to the technique, sfumato, discussed earlier. In Marilyn, it is hard to pick out a defined line in her hair, for example. The lines in DaVinciââ¬â¢s paintings are the same, flowing from one to the other. The Mona Lisa is blended so well that each section seems like a part of the next. The background of the Mona Lisa is a landscape with a river, bridge, trees, grass, and mountains. The view seems to go on forever, and there is no real focal point in the background. The backgrounds purpose in this painting in unknown, some say it is to contrast the peaceful look of the woman with a foreboding background. Others think it could have been as simple as DaVinci practicing with landscapes. Unlike Mona Lisa, the backgrounds of the Marilyn Monroe paintings are a solid color. The background contrasts dramatically with the colors in the actual face. The background pulls the viewerââ¬â¢s eye to Marilynââ¬â¢s face, instead of something that could be happening in the background. Symmetry is another example of a way the two paintings are alike. The shape of the Mona Lisa is very symmetrical. The woman is sitting straight and a straight line down the middle of the painting would show equal parts. The womanââ¬â¢s body is a triangular shape, with the tops of her legs and hand forming the base, and her head becoming the point. Her face is very circular, and the smile she displays is an arch of a circle. (Roemer, CK. ââ¬Å"Looking at Great Art Practice.â⬠Http://www.studiocodex.com. N.p., 2007. Web.) Warhol gives his Marilyn Monroe paintings a subtle heart shape with the curves created by her hairline. The painter, like DaVinci, uses simple shapes as well, such as the half-moon of her eye shadow, or the slight triangles of her eyebrows, which also shows symmetry. DaVinci creates a feeling of depth and space in his painting. The fact that the woman is taller than the mountains in the background suggests that she is seated very close to the viewer, while the mountains are in the distance. The detail of the pleats in her skirt, the individual pieces of hair, and transparent veil that covers her head are small details that make the woman seem closer to the viewer. The walking paths and streams of water leading up the painting make the eye move upwards, and form a sense of continuous forest. The viewers understand that the landscape goes on for quite a while. (Roemer, CK. ââ¬Å"Looking at Great Art Practice.â⬠Http://www.studiocodex.com. N.p., 2007. Web.) In contrast to DaVinci, Warhol used space by placing Marilynââ¬â¢s face in the middle of the painting. There is no real use of depth in this painting, because of the plain, contrasting color background. She almost appears to be completely flat against the surface. The eye is immediately drawn to the face in Marilyn Monroe. As mentioned above, the contrasting background color pulls the face forward, making the viewer notice her first. The same can be said of Mona Lisa, making focal point a similarity of the two. The woman in Mona Lisa is the biggest part of the painting. Her pale face offset by her dark hair and clothes draws the viewerââ¬â¢s eye to her. The position of her hands is right below her face, which also serves as a line to the focal point. The use of texture is somewhat absent from Warholââ¬â¢s painting, while the Mona Lisa is full of texture, another difference in the paintings. The folds in the womanââ¬â¢s dress make the painting seem more realistic, while the uneven and sharp edges of the mountains in the background contrast nicely with the smoothness of the womanââ¬â¢s face and hair. The womanââ¬â¢s skin also has a dotted affect which makes it seem more lifelike, instead of Warholââ¬â¢s Marilyn that seems fake and unrealistic. The use of value plays a huge role in both paintings. DaVinci uses abrupt changes in value; The pale skin of the woman face and hands against her dark hair and dress. He uses the same type of changes to show the wrinkles on the fabric of her clothing. (ROEMER, CK. ââ¬Å"Looking at Great Art Practice.â⬠Http://www.studiocodex.com. N.p., 2007. Web.) Andy Warhol uses value changes in the brightness of Marilynââ¬â¢s hair against the darker background. The black tones used underneath her hair are darker than the color of her somewhat pale skin. Another similarity is the massive amounts of recreations or paintings based on the same subject. Many artists has done their own version of the Mona Lisa, making her their nationality, fat, and even making her another person altogether. Many artists have also taken Marilyn Monroe and painted her their own way. Both paintings still play a huge role in society today. You can buy phone cases, laptop skins, and even clothing with a picture of these paintings. Replicas of both paintings can be seen hanging on walls of homes, restaurants, and art galleries. Mona Lisa and Marilyn Monroe are both easily recognized and correctly identified in todayââ¬â¢s society. A final similarity between the two paintings is the significance they both played in their style of art. Leonardo DaVinciââ¬â¢s Mona Lisa is said to have ââ¬Å"become the prototype for Renaissance paintings.â⬠(Lorenzzi, Rosella. ââ¬Å"Mona Lisa.â⬠Mona Lisa. N.p., 16 Jan. 2008. Web. 16 Dec. 2012.) Andy Warhol was affectionately known as the ââ¬Å"Pope of Popâ⬠, and his Marilyn Monroe series came to be one of the most well-known and popular works of pop art in his time. The final difference between the two, and most interesting, is that Warhol recreated DaVinciââ¬â¢s Mona Lisa in his own style; putting 30 Mona Lisas in one silk screen. Warhol is quoted as saying ââ¬Å"30 is better than 1.â⬠(Rose, Millie. ââ¬Å"Postmodernism.â⬠: Andy Warhol. N.p., 08 Nov. 2010. Web. 16 Dec. 2012.) The Mona Lisa is said to have been a major inspiration to Warhol, and he was honored to be able to have his own spin on this iconic painting. Obviously Warholââ¬â¢s w ork did not influence DaVinci because of the time frame. While the differences far outweigh the similarities, both paintings are brilliant. Warhol was a major influence in the pop art world, and his paintings are still being used in many forms of advertising today. DaVinci is said to have been the ultimate example of what a portrait should be, and without a doubt, he has influenced many of the other famous painters today. Both men, while their styles couldnââ¬â¢t have been anymore different, have two of the most famous names in the art world. * Esaack, Shelly. ââ¬Å"Lemon Marilyn,Ãâ 1962.â⬠About.com Art History. Socioecological National Smoking Strategy Australia Health And Social Care Essay
The damaging effects of smoke are good known, and go on to be one of the most evitable causes of sick wellness and decease in Australia. Smoking is a planetary wellness issue that affects all states worldwide. ( Naidoo and Wills, 2005 ) . Tobacco usage has a negative consequence on the immediate user every bit good as the other individual exposed to the fume, therefore the demand to command its usage and supply a supportive environment to enable persons to discontinue. ( Naidoo and Wills, 2005 ) . Health publicity provides a possible agency to accomplish this, as it attempts to better the wellness of persons and the community through wellness instruction, community engagement and coaction, sometimes taking to environmental and societal alteration ( Maben and Macleod, ( 1995 ) , as stated by Piper, 2009 ) . The Ottawa Charter ( WHO, 1986 ) sees wellness publicity beyond the person and the health care system, it requires a co-ordinated action between the authorities, societal and econo mic sectors. In other words, wellness publicity at one degree seeks to act upon healthy life style and better life-skills of the person, it besides ensures a corporate addition by act uponing statute law and policies towards environmental, socio-economic position, employment and occupational wellness at another degree ( Piper, 2009 ) . This paper focuses on the social-ecological theoretical account and relates it to the national baccy scheme which was introduced in Australia since 1999 to better the wellness of all Aussies by extinguishing or cut downing exposure to tobacco in all signifiers and to forestall jobs that can ensue from the usage of baccy ( The National Tobacco scheme, 1999 ) . The cardinal aims for the model was to better the control of baccy through community action, promote surcease of baccy usage, bound publicity and modulate baccy and eventually cut down environmental exposure to tobacco fume ( The National smoke Strategy 1999 ) . The debuts of the National smoke strategic model lead to the execution of smoking policies in public topographic points including the work topographic point. Smoke policy at public topographic points is intended to protect smoke and non-smoking citizens from the consequence of environmental exposure to baccy ( Bauer et al, 2005 ) and to promote tobacco users to discontin ue every bit shortly as possible. It is besides thought to cut down the injury that can be associated with go oning usage and dependance on baccy and nicotine. Smoke-free policies have been shown to deter people from smoking, cut down coffin nail ingestion, addition desire to discontinue and the likeliness of existent surcease ( Bauer et al, 2005 ) . The scheme was a comprehensive attack introduced by the authorities across all societal groups based on two warranting factors. These were that, bulk of persons who smoked were non making so based on free and informed picks. Peoples frequently say smoking is a personal life manner pick, this ignores the tobacco users apprehension of the wellness hazard, worlds of dependence and the fact that a batch of people start depending on baccy at a really immature age ( National baccy scheme, 2004 ) . The habit-forming nature of baccy compromises the person ââ¬Ës ability to do an informed pick. Second, the usage of baccy imposes a significant cost on the person, households, concerns, taxpayer and the community as a whole ( National baccy scheme, 2004 ) . Harmonizing to surveies long term tobacco users die prematurely from bosom diseases, with most of them within the ages of 50 and 60 ( National baccy scheme, 1999 ) . they may besides endure from clogging lung diseases, shot and other stultifying long term status which can cut down mobility taking to cut down quality of life ( National Tobacco Strategy, 2004 ) . Smokers besides spend a batch of money on baccy merchandises instead than they spend on goods and services which could hold been more good to them and their households. How the scheme was to be achieved The first measure was to present a comprehensive control scheme on baccy merchandises, by increasing monetary values and altering societal attitudes to baccy usage through ordinances and difficult striking runs. Government policies introduced regulated selling, publicity, gross revenues, revenue enhancement and packaging of baccy merchandises ( the national smoke scheme, 2004 ) . These ordinances made baccy merchandises less low-cost, nevertheless available to grownups who use them, but non extremely seeable and non sold to kids. It besides mandated equal and effectual consumer information on baccy merchandises in the media and at the point of sale. On the other manus, quit smoke and smoke free runs, services on handling baccy dependence schemes, community support, instruction, research, rating, monitoring and surveillance every bit good as work force development were strengthened ( the national smoke scheme, 2004 ) . They besides addressed issues around societal determiners of welln ess and trim plans towards the demands of deprived groups. This was to personalize the hazards of smoke and to increase the consciousness of effectual therapies and contact inside informations for services ( National smoke scheme, 2007 ) . The authorities policies besides ensured that all Australian tobacco users in contact with the wellness attention system were identified and advised to discontinue, and that all tobacco users probably to hold trouble retreating from tobacco-delivered nicotine have entree to back up and allow and effectual pharmacotherapy ( National smoke scheme, 2004 ) . The policies were besides aimed at attempts to forestall consumption by kids, and to guarantee that the community is intelligent about smoke. It was besides to cut down societal disaffection, which, along with many other negative effects, is associated with uptake and continuance of bad behaviors including smoke, and to put in baccy control as a cardinal scheme for forestalling and cut downing societal disadvantages in the communities ( National smoke scheme, 2004 ) . To extinguish exposure to environmental baccy fume, at work, indoors and in public topographic points ( including out-of-doorss where mobility is limited ) , and to understate it in residential establishments, the policy meant ââ¬Ëno smoking ââ¬Ë ( entire prohibition ) within these premises. As countries where smoke is allowed provide small or no protection from environmental fume ( National smoke scheme, 2004 ) . Smoke free workplace policies by contrast virtually extinguish exposure to tobacco fume during working hours. They besides help tobacco users in those workplaces to cut down the sum they smoke each twenty-four hours and increased their opportunities of successfully discontinuing ( National smoke scheme, 2004 ) . Such policies dramatically affect societal norms about smoke. In legal powers which introduce smoke free Torahs, fewer kids take up smoke and Numberss of tobacco users and Numberss of coffin nails consumed decrease comparative to legal powers without such Tora hs ( National smoke scheme, 2004 ) . Social-ecological Model as a Background Model for the model The footing of this model can be construed from the social-ecological theoretical account where a alteration in the environment and policies causes a alteration in person ââ¬Ës behavior. The social-ecological theoretical account recognizes the interlacing interaction between the person and the environment ( Healthy Active Oregon, 2003 ) . It besides focuses on reorientation of organisations and policy alteration ( Elder et al, 2006 ) . It is non a individual policy or theory but a instead wide overarching construct that brings together several different Fieldss of research ( Stokols, 1996 ) . Although the person is responsible for keeping a life style that improves wellness and reduces hazard, the societal environment in which the person lives mostly determines behavior ( Healthy Active Oregon, 2003 ) . A barrier can therefore signifier in a manner that can forestall the community as a whole in accomplishing behaviour alteration ( Healthy Active Oregon, 2003 ) . Harmonizing to Winett ( 1995 ) some wellness publicity plans have non been effectual due to failure in acknowledging the consequence of environmental-related factors on health-related behavior. He hence suggests the integrating of theoretical accounts for behaviour alteration with plans affecting persons, groups, organisations, community and institutional degrees of engagement ( Winett, 1995 ) . Hence the societal ecological theoretical account suggests a more comprehensive attack of non merely the person ââ¬Ës duty of health-risks behaviours, instead it targets the single and socio-economic factors ( Piper, 2009 ) . The theoretical account is categorized into intrapersonal, interpersonal, community, organisational and public policy as schemes for advancing wellness ( McLeroy et al. , 1988 ) . Intrapersonal The intrapersonal degree of the theoretical account is based on psychological theories of alteration, where it utilizes the mass media, social-marketing, instruction and development of accomplishments to alter wellness related attitudes, addition cognition and advance ego regard ( McLeroy, 1988, Piper, 2009 ) . This degree implies that the proximal cause of behavior or mechanisms for alteration of behavior prevarications with the person and non the environment ( McLeroy, 1988 ) . And in the model this was traveling to be achieved by shiping on difficult hitting smoke free runs and ordinances which will be targeted at altering perceptual experiences and bettering cognition of the person, with the hope of giving a behaviour alteration. After the person had been made aware of the hazards and the health-related issues that occur as a consequence of smoke, it is up to them to take either to smoke or give up smoke. However at this degree there can be emotional and expressive feelings that people experience particularly in the context of wellness related behaviour alteration ( Davies and Macdowal, 2006 ) . Some persons may truly lose the wagess from smoke and the fond regards they have antecedently developed to smoking while still admiting the benefits of smoking surcease ( Davies and Macdowall, 2006 ) . There is so the feeling of ennui, defeat and choler as they loose the sense of making something and deficiency of the company, this is the point where the person is likely to get worse and travel back to smoke ( Davies and Macdowall, 2006 ) . Hence separate smoke surcease plans that acknowledges and run into the specified demands of persons should besides be developed. There is therefore the demand for services like the quit aid lines and reding installations to back up the person who wants to give up smoke. This scheme has been recognized in the model to help the person to get by. The social-ecological theoretical account identifies this and hence does non merely concentrate narrowly on the person but besides other societal factors and webs which all comes together to help the person to get by and alter behavior. Interpersonal This deals with the person ââ¬Ës societal webs such as household, friends, neighbors and contacts at work, the psychosocial theory underpins this degree. The purpose is to alter societal norms and better societal web and support ( Piper, 2005 ) . These are seen to hold direct influence on the individual. The importance of this degree is that about all behaviors happens in a societal context, and behaviors in these context tend to be accustomed, hence it takes making things otherwise to interrupt these wonts ( Davies and Macdowall, 2006 ) . Therefore the intercessions to be designed demands to change the signifier of bing societal webs ( McLeroy, 1988 ) . Particularly they should be designed to modify societal influences which are likely to back up and keep unwanted wellness related behaviors and strengthen those that influence wellness positively. ( McLeroy, 1988 ) . It besides involves learning the person on how to manage interactions with others as they continue to prosecute the ir new ways of get bying without smoking ( Davies and Macdowall, 2006 ) . Mentioning to the model it was aimed at foregrounding the consequence of baccy fume on households and besides prevented kids acquiring entree to baccy and other baccy merchandises. It besides hopes to act upon cultural, societal and economic factors that influence uptake and uninterrupted usage of baccy. Discontinuing smoke may non be an easy thing to make nevertheless with a supportive, good informed, good and strong societal web the person should be able to give up and be cognizant of how and where to seek aid. Community A community is said to be intelligent when it has equal information to be able to do an informed determination on baccy usage ( National baccy Strategy, 1999 ) . In the community, information such as how to acquire aid and quit, the difference between the usage of baccy and dependence, the consequence of baccy fume on the environment, the benefits of discontinuing at any age and sooner than latter and on a whole, the consequence of baccy on the society should be easy accessible ( National Tobacco Strategy, 1999 ) . It is a good known fact that information entirely does non take to behaviour alteration by persons in the community ( National Tobacco Strategy, 1999 ) , otherwise 22 % of the Australian population will non go on to smoke regardless of the sum of information available on the hurtful consequence of smoke ( Egger et al,2005 ) . For communities to derive control over baccy use the scheme was focused on planning and execution of community based programmes for commanding baccy, by supplying equal resources for a scope of smoking surcease services in the communities. Local powers such as Community leaders, parents, schools and young person organisations are all motivated to acquire involved ( National Tobacco Strategy, 1999 ) . Health publicity at this degree is about authorising the community through community development, alliance and conflict direction schemes ( Piper, 2009 ) . Stokols ( 1996 ) defines ecology as the survey of the association between beings and their environment, and puts this in the position of wellness publicity in the community, where the focal point is shifted from the person ââ¬Ës wellness related intercessions unto that of the community working together in the environment in which they live in. this reflects a more socio ecological orientation of wellness publicity which is a castel lation of the person, community and the constructions around ( Stokols, 1996 ) . Organizations Intervention at this degree involves organisational procedures, manner, leading, civilization, practises and inducements to better health-related behavior or enable behavior alteration ( McLeroy et al. , 1992 ) . A big part of most people ââ¬Ës lives are spent in organisations such as work and establishments, these organisations have an influence on the person ââ¬Ës health-related behavior ( McLeroy et al. , 1988 ) . In the context of wellness publicity, administrations particularly those affecting worksites give entree to a big group of people and offer the chance for societal support and behavior alteration, peculiarly when the behavior is a societal norm ( McLeroy, 1988 ) . This degree in the model means the execution of a entire smoke prohibition policies backed by jurisprudence in the work topographic point and public topographic points by employers and persons of authorization. The mark of wellness publicity is non the organisation or the establishment itself but the employees and persons who are likely to be institutionalised ( McLeroy, 1988 ) . Organizational alterations are indispensable in an ecological model where a long-run behavioral alteration is supported, and a requirement for institutionalisation of wellness publicity ( McLeroy, 1988 ) . Public Policy State capacity and substructure, including clear leading and dedicated resources, are indispensable to the development and execution of a strong strategic program that includes the designation and riddance of tobacco-related disparities ( CDC, 2007 ) . Tobacco control plans need to further the motive to discontinue smoking through policy alterations and media runs every bit good as through advancing quit line services ( CDC, 2007 ) . The authorities at this degree will be responsible for patroling policies which are put in topographic point to implement the ordinances and limitations on baccy usage and its publicity. Some surveies have shown that execution of authorities policy to censor smoke has worked really good. For illustration a survey which evaluated the consequence of smoking prohibition at a jobsite by Borland et Al ( 1999 ) , found out that, workplace smoking prohibition contributed to a decrease of coffin nail ingestion. There was no grounds to propose that heavy tobacco users who were deemed as the most addicted compensated the greatest during java and tiffin interruptions. This could propose that the fuss of go forthing the workplace to smoke was an hindrance taking to a decrease in ingestion ( Borland et al, 1990 ) . It besides implies that including institutional and public policies in wellness publicity can accomplish an appropriate behavior alteration because non merely will the person have to postulate with the incommodiousness but besides the possibility of interrupting the jurisprudence and holding to confront the effects, farther deters persons from coffin nail ingestion. The smoke prohibition, as mentioned earlier, Was a authorities scheme to advance a healthy state. So in this instance employers are merely utilizing their substructure to implement a authorities scheme. Evaluation of the Model One cardinal advantage of the socio-ecological theoretical account is that it has the ability to integrate schemes of wellness publicity by utilizing behaviour alteration and environmental betterment in a wide theoretical frame work ( Stokols, 1996 ) . It besides highlights a cross-level scrutiny of health-related jobs and proposes an appropriate interventional scheme by incorporating two or more systematic degrees ( Stokols, 1996 ) . For illustration: organizational, personal or community degrees that allow practicians to analyze both persons and cumulative visual aspect of wellness jobs and how it affects intercessions at all the different degrees ( Stokols, 1996 ) . Hence the unsighted musca volitanss that can non be identified by other theoretical accounts, due to concentrating on merely a fix determiner of wellness or either the person or the environment is avoided as attending is given to an interplay of factors at both single and other comprehensive degrees ( Stokols, 1996 ) . However, the social-ecological theoretical account is non without its restrictions. First, intercessions designed based on the social-ecological theoretical account require incorporation of different Fieldss of cognition. It besides involves the coordination of different sectors in the community. It hence becomes practically impossible to implement such plans ( Stokols, 1996 ) . Therefore, this method should be regarded as lone portion of the theoretical account that can be actively implemented and that the remainder is merely inactive. It is hence logical to inquire whether the social-ecological theoretical account is excessively inclusive in trying to embrace so many factors and taking the focal point off from the person and in consequence doing the single feel less responsible. In practise, it is of import to allow the single feel they are non on their ain by offering support. However, it is of import for the practicians, to non take duty off from the person. Decision In decision, the socio-ecological theoretical account identifies human behavior to happen in extremely organised constructions which can hold a great impact on the wellbeing of the person ( Stokols, 1996 ) . Behaviour alteration can be achieved by act uponing the physical, environmental and the societal interactions of the person, though this may non be ever so, however, the social-ecological position of wellness publicity is more likely to accomplish a higher impact as it uses a multi-disciplinary attack.

John Locke outlinect Essay
ââ¬Å"Rationalism is the thought that appeals to reason or intellect a primary or fundamental source of knowledge or justification. â⬠ââ¬Å"It is typically contrasted with empiricism, which appeals to sensory experience as a primary or fundamental source of knowledge or justification. â⬠John Locke argues that, ââ¬Å"We come to this world knowing nothing whatsoever. â⬠(Warburton 74). He believes that experience teaches us everything we know. This view is usually known as empiricism, in contrast to innatism, (the theory that some of our knowledge is in born), and toà rationalism (the strife that we can achieve knowledge of the world by the power of reason alone). ?Lockeââ¬â¢s essay ââ¬Å"Human Understandingâ⬠published in 1689, soon became a philosophical bestseller. He produced four editions of it in his lifetime, and it had already reached its eleventh by 1735. This book is complex and wide ranging work; its main focus is the origin and limits of human knowledge. He tries to answer these questions. * what can we know? * What is the relation between thought and reality? These are real the perennial questions of the branch of philosophy called epistemology, or the theory of knowledge. ?Locke described his role as that of an underlabourer , clearing away conceptual confusions so that the scientists, or natural philosophers, as they were then known, could carry on their important work of adding to human knowledge. (Warburton 75). ? No innate principle 1. Locke does not believe that it makes sense to say that someone could be having a thought without their knowing what that thought was about. He rejects any idea of unconscious thoughts as nonsensical. A) One argument he uses to support his claim that there are no innate principles is that it is obvious that there is not total agreement about what the supposedly innateà principles might be. If we were all born knowing that, for example, we should keep our promises, then everyone would recognize this as fundamental principle. But, as Locke points out, there is no such general agreement. (Warburton 76). Nor do children immediately recognize the principle as one binding on them. Locke continues to argue that there is no innate principle aside from the principle that is taught and learnt. ?Locke supports his idea by saying, if there were innate principles then children must strongly abide by them since adults have already influenced by the culture and people. _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ These and other arguments lead Locke to reject the view that there are any innate principles. This led him with the task of explaining how it is that the human mind comes to be furnished with thoughts, beliefs, and knowledge of the world. His answer is that all our ideas come from experience. Ideas Locke uses the word idea to mean whatever it is that anyone thinks about. When you look out of your window, what you see ââ¬â a tree perhaps, or a sparrow ââ¬â is not the tree or sparrow itself, but rather representation of it, an idea, something like a picture in your head. (Warburton 76). Locke believes that not all our ideas are received from immediate sensation of the world. Some of them are ideas of reflection, such as when we reason, or remember or will do something. Locke believes that all our ideas ultimately come from experience, so that the contents of our thoughts, even when we are reflecting rather than perceiving, all come from sensation. Example: A child locked away would have no more idea of scarlet and green than he would of the taste ofà oyster or pineapple if he had never tried them. Ideas can be combined in several ways, so that once we have the idea of scarlet and the idea of a coat, we can imagine a scarlet coat, even if weââ¬â¢ve never actually seen one. But the simpler ideas from which the complex ones are built all originate in perception by one or more of the five senses. ( Warburton 77). Primary and Secondary Qualities When we say that a snowball is greyish-white and cold and round, what we mean is that it can produce in us ides of these properties. Locke distinguishes primary and secondary qualities , giving a very different account of each. -Primary qualities are inseparable from objects. The primary qualities of a snowball would include its shape and solidity, but not its color or its coldness. Solidity and shapes are more likely to remain constant at place over time. ââ¬â Secondary qualities would be color and coldness because its coldness can be changed at a different room temperature while different light settings can give shade to whatever object of your concentration that in a way gives you an illusion view of what youââ¬â¢re actually watching. Personal Identity.
